Raja Ampat Yacht Charter S — Raja Ampat 7-Day vs 10-Day Yacht…

The Direct Answer

7 vs 10 days — what actually changes

A 7-day charter realistically covers either Dampier + Mansuar (north) or Misool + Boo Windows (south). A 10-day charter adds Wayag karst on the north loop or Daram pinnacles on the south loop — plus the buffer to wait out adverse current windows.

The difference is not just three more dive days. It is the ability to combine two of the four pillars of Raja Ampat in one trip, the freedom to pick optimal current windows, and the buffer to absorb a weather day without losing critical sites.

Why It's Binding

The geography problem

Raja Ampat spreads across roughly 50,000 km². Dampier Strait sits 12 NM north of Sorong, Mansuar another 15 NM further, Wayag is 80 NM north-northwest, and Misool 90 NM south. A phinisi cruises at 8 knots — the math gets binding very quickly.

A 7-day charter has 6 nights aboard. Day one is Sorong departure and overnight steam; day seven is return. That leaves 5 operating days. Steam to Wayag and back, or to Misool and back, and two of those five days disappear to repositioning.

The fixed-wing transit from Sorong to Waisai (central archipelago) or Misool airstrip saves 6–12 hours of repositioning — worth the $950/pax round trip if your charter duration is constrained.

Day-by-Day

Four realistic itinerary options

Northern and southern loops, both at 7-day and 10-day durations.

North · 7 Days Most Booked

Sorong → Dampier → Wayag → Sorong

Tight loop optimised for first-time visitors who want headline manta and reef sites. Best in May–September.

1

Sorong embark afternoon. Overnight steam to Mansuar. Check dive at Mioskon.

2

Mansuar full day. Manta Sandy / Manta Ridge depending on tide. Mioskon and Sardine Reef.

3

Mansuar → Dampier. Cape Kri and Sardine Reef. Overnight at Dampier.

4

Dampier full day. Blue Magic, Mike's Point, Chicken Reef.

5

Dampier → Wayag if weather cooperates, else second pass at Cape Kri + Manta Sandy.

6

Wayag karst hike + lagoon snorkel + baby shark cove.

7

Return to Sorong. Disembark.

Outcome

Reaches Wayag in ~50% of charters. Manta probability 90% in peak window. Single-pass photography.

North · 10 Days Photographer Favourite

Sorong → Mansuar → Dampier → Wayag → Sorong

Adds buffer and reshoot capacity. Wayag becomes a confirmed two-day program rather than a coin flip.

1

Sorong embark. Overnight to Mansuar.

2–3

Mansuar full coverage. Multiple passes at Manta Sandy and Manta Ridge.

4

Mansuar → Dampier. Cape Kri and Sardine Reef.

5

Dampier full day. Blue Magic and Mike's Point.

6

Dampier → Wayag overnight steam.

7

Wayag day one. Karst hike, lagoon snorkel, Eagle Rock dive.

8

Wayag day two. Outer reef dives + baby shark cove.

9

Wayag → Mansuar return.

10

Return to Sorong. Disembark.

Outcome

100% Wayag coverage. Manta probability 98%. 2 weather buffer days. Full photographer reshoot capacity.

South · 7 Days

Sorong → Misool North → Central → South → Sorong

Southern equivalent of the 7-day north loop. Best in October–April during the northwest monsoon.

1

Sorong embark. Overnight steam to Misool north.

2

Misool north. Magic Mountain, Tank Rock, Goa Farondi.

3

Misool central. Boo Windows, Verena's Garden, Andiamo.

4

Misool south. Fiabacet pinnacles, Wagmab, Whale Rock.

5

Karawapop area. Jellyfish lake + rock paintings + No Contest.

6

Misool → Sorong overnight. Optional final dive at Pisang.

7

Disembark Sorong.

Outcome

Daram (far-southern atoll) not reached. One-pass coverage of Misool signature sites.

South · 10 Days Photographer Preferred

Sorong → Misool → Daram → Misool → Sorong

Unlocks Daram pinnacles + second passes at Fiabacet. Daram alone justifies the duration upgrade.

1

Sorong embark. Overnight to Misool north.

2–3

Misool north full coverage.

4–5

Misool central + Boo Windows reshoot day.

6

Misool → Daram steam day. Single afternoon dive.

7

Daram full day. Three pinnacle dives at Andiamo Twin and Cargo.

8

Daram → Misool south. Fiabacet second pass.

9

Karawapop + Misool central reshoots. Overnight to Sorong.

10

Disembark Sorong.

Outcome

Daram pinnacle topography + pelagic encounters unavailable elsewhere in the archipelago.

Regions Covered

Three distinct dive zones

North

Wayag

Iconic karst lagoon. Manta encounters at Friwen Bondabon, hike for the panorama.

South

Misool

Soft-coral walls and pinnacles. Boo Windows, Magic Mountain, Yilliet rock art.

Central

Dampier Strait

High-current channel between Mansuar and Kri. Cape Kri, Sardine Reef, Blue Magic.

The Combined Option

12-Day Combined Loop — both north and south

The only way to dive both north and south on a single charter. Operates in shoulder windows of late April and late September. Route: Sorong → Misool → Dampier → Wayag → Sorong.

Also the only configuration that comfortably absorbs the Cendrawasih extension if you want to add whale shark targeting from Triton Bay.

Cost Implication

Day count vs cost multiplier

Cost rises less than day count because mooring, transfer, and provisioning setup is largely fixed.

1.00×

7-day loop

1.42×

10-day loop

Single region + buffer + reshoots.

1.68–1.72×

Decision Guide

Which duration fits your priorities

7 Days

Budget-constrained first-time visitors who want headline manta and reef sites in one pass.

10 Days

Photographers, weather-resilient travel, families wanting both Wayag karst and Mansuar mantas confidently.

12 Days Combined

The only configuration that comfortably covers both north and south on a single charter — shoulder windows only.

Real charter pattern: ~35% of our 2025 base were repeat visitors. The repeat-visit pattern almost universally shifts from 7-day first trip to 10- or 12-day on subsequent trips, with 70% choosing the opposite seasonal end on the second trip.
